Frequently Asked Questions

What types of products are used to waterproof foundations?

Foundation waterproofing is critical to protect a building from water infiltration and excessive moisture. At Heneault Gosselin, we have fully eliminated the use of bituminous membranes due to their significant risks of contaminating soil and compromising indoor air quality. These petroleum-based products are outdated and potentially harmful.

Instead, we recommend sprayed polyurethane (urethane foam) as our primary waterproofing material. This advanced solution not only seals the foundation effectively but also provides superior insulation, with an R-value of R-7.5 per inch. It is more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible than traditional products.

Our complete approach also includes:

  • Supplying and installing an exterior French drain along the excavated foundation perimeter.
  • Installing two clean-out chimneys to maintain the drainage system.
  • Adding an indoor sump basin with a sealed cover, connected to the drainage system.

In addition to spray urethane, other waterproofing products may be used depending on the project:

  • Liquid membranes (elastomeric): flexible, cold-applied coatings that adapt to complex surfaces.
  • Drainage panels and dimple membranes: promote water flow to the drain while protecting the wall.
  • Cement-based coatings: effective on solid concrete, mostly used inside.

The best product depends on the foundation type, soil moisture, and building conditions. For a personalized waterproofing solution, contact Heneault Gosselin.
